Female dancer in Rotterdam

By Annabel Oosteweeghel

Annabel Oosteweeghel for Move Over I'm Next: Rotterdam is a city on the move. I represent the city's dynamic by working with Rotterdam dancers of many nationalities. In this photographic series, the social character of dance, featuring a strong bond between bystanders and fellow-dancers, reveals Rotterdam as a city of and for people. Improvisation and encouragement from others are obviously appreciated. The photos are about human individuals and their power; they float, so that they are lifted above reality. They are, however, also about reunion, collaboration, love, friendships and meetings. In this way, I want to create a picture of Rotterdam in which openness, curiosity, beauty, strength and dynamics all play a major part – a city with an international character and unlimited possibilities, and always with the idea of authenticity, growth and creativity.

Artist Statement 'I don't make it any more beautiful than it is; I make it as beautiful as it can be'. That one second... ... when the light is just right … when your hair looks quite good ... when all the colours blend perfectly ... when your eyes are smiling ... when everything is good. Everyone recognises such moments; and they are there every day. That is what I want to show. And that is why I work on location and why my images are identifiable. The beauty in my photographs does not exceed reality – they are simply as beautiful as reality can be.
