First-year students from the Interior Design program at the Hout- en Meubileringscollege took on a design challenge from the Municipality of Rotterdam: to design a public artwork that embodies the diversity, creativity, and connecting spirit of Rotterdam\u2019s student community. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Campagne \u2018Welkom Student: Rotterdam leert je leven!\u2019<\/strong>
\n<\/strong>De gemeente Rotterdam verwelkomt samen met de onderwijsinstellingen vanaf augustus 40000 nieuwe mbo, hbo en wo studenten in Rotterdam. Samen met alle onderwijsinstellingen in Rotterdam wil de gemeente de studenten een warm welkom heten. Dit gebeurt door de campagne \u2018Welkom Student: Rotterdam leert je leven\u2019. Nieuwe studenten worden wegwijs gemaakt, kunnen meedoen aan toffe events en krijgen tips en tricks om zowel elkaar als Rotterdam te leren kennen. <\/p>\n

The assignment<\/strong>
\n<\/strong>Rotterdam is een bruisende studentenstad met een breed scala aan onderwijsinstellingen. De gemeente Rotterdam wil het jonge talent dat studeert aan de Rotterdamse onderwijsinstellingen zich welkom laten voelen in Rotterdam. Ook wil de gemeente dat nieuwe studenten tijdens hun studieperiode ten volste gebruik maken van de rijke (persoonlijke) leeromgeving die Rotterdam is en kan zijn. Aan de studenten werd daarom gevraagd: <\/p>\n

\u201cOntwerp een (kunst)object dat nieuwe studenten in Rotterdam verwelkomt en de diversiteit en creativiteit van al de Rotterdamse studenten laat zien. Dit object moet een plek worden waar studenten van verschillende studierichtingen en achtergronden elkaar ontmoeten en verbinden.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

21 designs submitted<\/strong>
\nIn total, 21 designs were created by the students, including ideas such as Textbook Tree, The Markthal, Maze of Connection, and The Handbook. After a feedback round focusing on safety and feasibility, five designs were nominated for the final round. The winning design, \u201cDe Bruggen\u201d (The Bridges), was created by Anna de Jong, Jolie Martijnse, and Fleur van Rijn. <\/p>\n

Exhibition: the bridges<\/strong>
\nThe artwork symbolizes Rotterdam\u2019s iconic bridges, which connect the north and south of the city.
It invites new students to meet, connect, and build bridges \u2014 both literally and figuratively.
A welcome poem by Lea Schouls accompanies the piece, reinforcing its message of connection and inclusion.
The artwork will be on display at Rotterdam Central Station from August 26 to September 8, 2024.<\/p>\n
