The Maritime Museum Rotterdam makes the often invisible maritime world visible and tells a broad audience the fascinating story of its past, present, and future — and how it continues to shape our society.

“For some, the coast is the end of the land; for others, it’s the beginning of the world.” Piet de Jong, former submarine commander and Prime Minister

This quote perfectly reflects how we view the maritime world. For many, it is still unknown territory; for others, it is a world full of opportunity and potential — if only you dare to look beyond the horizon. Looking beyond the horizon has always been part of the Dutch spirit. Centuries ago, we had the courage to sail the seas and explore the world.

Today, and even more so in the future, the maritime world plays a vital role.
As the global population grows and land becomes scarce and overused, the sea offers opportunities for food, transport, energy, housing, and recreation — and with them, solutions to major societal challenges.

At the Maritime Museum Rotterdam, we want to contribute to these solutions by inspiring people to see, understand, and connect with the power of the maritime world.
