Rotterdam pupils grow wiser through the Science Hub
Since 2010, nearly 20,000 pupils aged 8 to 18 have been inspired by science and encouraged to adopt an inquisitive, research-based approach to learning through the Science Hub of Erasmus University Rotterdam. Examples include the Erasmus Junior College for primary school pupils and the Erasmus Research Programme for extended projects. The Science Hub brings science directly into the classroom. Through so-called inquiry-based learning, pupils are encouraged to actively acquire knowledge themselves — by asking questions, conducting research, and developing solutions. The emphasis is therefore not only on gaining knowledge, but also on developing research skills and a curious, investigative mindset.
A real professor in the classroom
With Meet the Professor, Erasmus University Rotterdam quite literally brings science into the classroom. Professors get on their bikes and visit primary schools across the city to introduce pupils to their research and academic fields. During these special visits, they talk about their work, answer curious questions, and guide pupils through small research activities. In this way, children discover in a playful manner what science is, and experience that research is not only educational but also enjoyable and accessible to everyone.

Lessons at the university, a professor in class — or a student at the front of it
The Science Hub has developed a broad range of programmes. These include the Erasmus Science Programme for pupils in the third year of pre-university education (vwo), the Erasmus Research Programme for extended projects, the Erasmus Discovery Programme for lower secondary education, and the Erasmus Junior College for primary schools, offering a variety of lesson series on topics such as Gaming, Law, Philosophy, Economics, Psychology, the Future, Sustainability, and Medicine. Children can also attend a range of junior lectures and workshops.
